PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE missions are designed to encourage or reinforce positive attitudes and behaviors in enemy forces or civilians. This is achieved by delivering personalized messages to the target audience. PSYOP soldiers are armed with images, graphics and expressions to develop and deliver the right message at the right time and place to achieve the desired results.

The art of PSYOP relies more on persuasion than physical force. The tools of the trade are logic, fear, desire, and other mental factors used to induce feelings, attitudes, and behaviors.

The 4th Psychological Operations Group at Fort Bragg is the only psychological operations group in the active force structure. The 4th POG has six regionally aligned battalions (1, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9), each targeting specific cultures and languages. Since September 11, 2001, the 4th POG has been active in multiple locations in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Horn of Africa, and the Philippines.

But even more interesting than the terms are the originals of each. While some terms have clear origins, how others got started is a mystery. Military terms are sometimes seen as mildly derogatory, such as the term "boot" or in this case "POG", which means "Man Other than Ground".

In the Marine Corps and Army, POG is short for "Non-Ground People." For the uninitiated, "grunt" means infantry—foot soldiers in the Army or Marines in the Marine Corps.
